Happy New Year friends! I just realized as I was going over all my photos from the past year to choose these very special 150 that this is my 6th year to do this! That makes me so happy! I do want to say that this is a totally subjective grouping in that these are my favorites… and have not been chosen by voting, or an impartial panel or anything even remotely like that. Some of the photos were taken by my daughter Celeste, which I must note because darn it I didn’t get to go to New Zealand where a couple of these were taken. I love every one of my clients and every wedding, event and portrait session is so important to me. But there is something about certain photos that just jump out at you, either aesthetically, or emotionally, or compositionally… and sometimes because of what they represent or say. And every year I do this it gets harder… I mean to tell you it’s difficult to choose just 150 out of over 100,000 photos. This is just something I do to reflect over my past year of work and to celebrate my clients and to celebrate creativity! A lot of lot of love went into each and every one of these photos and it was such a joy and honor to work with each of you and to be a part of your lives in this way. Here’s to more photo adventures in 2018!
SARAH’S STUNNING ARLINGTON HALL BRIDALS
Sarah is beautiful, no doubt, but the thing you discover quickly after meeting her is that she is truly a breath of fresh air… so genuine, down to earth, and kind. I form a connection with all of my clients, and especially my brides because we spend so much time together, and I know that after sharing this wedding journey, I will count Sarah and her lovely family as lifetime friends. They all have that open hearted hospitality about them that just draws you in and assures you that you belong. The afternoon that I spent with Sarah and her mom Janet at Arlington Hall at Lee Park was such a joy, filled with sunshine and light, white columns and climbing vines… perfect for a Southern girl. I should also say that Sarah is not just a pretty face, she is an accomplished woman who graduated from the University of Virginia and is a large animal veterinarian. Her groom is an F-16 pilot for the United States Air Force and the two of them are just adorable together! I have been so excited to share this session, and when you see the beautiful piece of furniture covered in a deep red velvet, note that it is a family heirloom that Sarah and her mom brought from Paris, Texas just for this session. Those kind of personal details are the best!

THE BEAUTIFUL VIBRANT MYCOSKIE FAMILY
The Mycoskie family is so full of life! Just being around them brings a smile to your face. We met at a nature park near their home on a lovely late fall day and I’m pretty sure the golden Texas afternoon sun was shining just for us. Lori, the gorgeous mother of these three adorable children, is such a stunner and her husband Jordan has one of those charming smiles that just puts you at ease immediately. They are such genuine people and their connection with one another translates effortlessly into these images. This was a combination family shoot and also a celebration of sweet Caroline turning one! She is going to grow up well protected with her two big brothers Colt and Sawyer… the three of them together send the cuteness factor right off the charts!
I think it’s so important for families to celebrate their love for one another with images. It’s always a difficult thing to make happen, especially when you have young children… just choosing outfits and getting everyone dressed can be daunting…but the results are certainly worth it! Speaking of outfits… how cute do these kids look?! Caroline has to be one of the best dressed little girls around.
I can’t wait to photograph this beautiful family again in the future, we had the best time together!
SO BEAUTIFUL TOGETHER… NICOLE, EVA AND JAMES
I am officially calling this gorgeous mom day on the blog. One look at these images of the stunning Nicole Atzbach and her twins Eva and James and you will see why. Nicole is not only beautiful, but she is the epitome of the cool mom. She is beautiful, wicked smart, funny, and an a great dancer too! She is the curator at the Meadows Museum, she speaks several languages, has fabulous taste in shoes, does an amazing tango and probably any other ballroom dance you want to throw her way, she knows a lot about music, and she is liable to break out in song when you least expect it. She and I have been friends for some time. I met her when I was on staff at the Meadows Museum and we have been close ever since. I count her unequivocally as one of my treasures so I’d like for you to get to know her a little better. I wanted to do this post today in honor of Eva and James’ birthday… I mean can you believe this lady had twins? 10 years ago today they were born, and actually I took these shots a few years ago, but I thought it was the perfect time to revisit them… time for some new photos my friend!
The day I photographed these three I noticed the gentle, loving way Nik was with her children… and today on their birthday I am stealing a quote from her birthday Facebook post about the kids… but I don’t think she will mind. She wrote: “They are two of the most empathetic, funny, and smart souls I’ve ever known; and I appreciate all the slack they allow me. I am so proud of them and very lucky to be a part of their journey; Eva hopes to be an artist/art teacher someday, while James goes back and forth on being a comedian or perhaps a ‘lawyer who also plays in a rock band and sells kittens on the side.’ They are my two very favorite people in the world, big or little.” There is no way I could have said it better. I just think Nicole looks so beautiful in these photos… like someone in a spread in Vogue or Town and Country. Wow lady, could you be any prettier?
These two kids are filled with so much personality and we laughed a lot on this fall day… I can’t wait to do it again.
There’s nothing I like better than photographing people who love each other… and it’s even better when it’s a dear friend. Love you Nik… and Happy Birthday James and Eva!
THE STUNNING WHITEMAN FAMILY
David, Exa and Bailey Whiteman are really beautiful people… and I know this can sound trite, but they really are equally beautiful within. They are one of my favorite families to photograph because we always have fun and also probably because the images always turn out to be stunning. They are just photogenic, that’s all there is to it. Also… David’s sister Cathy is one of my very best friends… and their whole wonderful extended family is in many ways like my family so when we are together it is always a joy. David is a very talented musician and singer and has his own band, The David Whiteman Band. I’ve photographed the band on a couple of occasions and let me tell you they are fabulous! You really have to experience them for yourself… they can really engage a crowd and raise the roof in the best possible way! He is also a Firefighter at Dallas Fire Rescue… and firefighters have always been among my heroes. Exa is a Director at AT&T and is a busy, stylish career woman and mom, who loves to run and play golf… and Bailey is definitely the star of their show. She has obviously inherited her mother’s beauty and her Dad’s talent. They are such a loving family and I think it really shows in these images. The way David looks at Exa is pretty amazing for a married couple, isn’t it ladies? I mean… wow.
I did two separate sessions with this family and boy was it worth it. The first was on a rather warm, ok uncomfortably hot… summer day… and the second was on an absolutely gorgeous fall afternoon with golden light. We shot during that magic afternoon hour, right before the sun goes down that makes everyone look lovely… although these three don’t really need any help in that department.
It was a special second shoot for another reason as well, because Exa’s sister Tiffany and her adorable baby Dallas came along for some shots as well. He is so cute that you just want to immediately pick him up and kiss him and squeeze him… I defy you to look at these images and tell me you don’t agree.
Everyone had so much fun playing with Dallas… and when Uncle David played airplane with him, Bailey had to get in on the action too… and the images are priceless. I like almost nothing better than photographing happy couples, families, extended families and friends experiencing joy and laughter… and when you catch it on film it’s like gold.
I took the Whiteman’s to one of my favorite little spots with wispy grass and great light… lovely spot for a lovely family…
Bailey is so sweet with her cousin Dallas… and these images are some of my favorites… the colors, the light and the tenderness between them make these photos special.
I’m already looking forward to the next chance I get to photograph these friends again. Thanks David, Exa, Bailey, Tiffany and Baby Dallas for a really wonderful afternoon… one of my favorite sessions ever!
IT’S ALL ABOUT SOPHIE
Sophie Franks is such a lovely girl, that is evident… and not only in appearance, but in her manner, and in the way she interacts with the people in her life. Sophie has a younger sister Isabel and an older brother Alex and when you see the three of them with their parents there is so much love between them. Sophie is an amazing sister… and I can tell by the way she talks about her friends that she is a devoted friend as well. I got to know Sophie through her mom Mousumi… who is a dear friend of mine that I came to know through the Meadows Museum. Mousumi was one of the Museum’s amazing docents when I worked on the education staff there… and when I left the museum she took over the position I had held. I’ve had the privilege of spending time in the Frank’s home… and they are such wonderful people, all of them are accomplished in their own ways and they are so welcoming to anyone who comes into their home. I have taken photos of their family as well as their extended family. The session I did with their grandparents will make its way onto this blog and was one of my favorite sessions to date. These were her senior photos, and we actually did two separate sessions… a casual shoot at the Arboretum and a second session with some more dressed up shots that we did in my neck of the woods in the Plano area. These sessions were a quite a few months apart so you’ll notice that Sophie’s hair is longer in the casual photos… and of course, she’s beautiful both ways.
Sophie is now at Texas A&M where she is a freshman, studying nutrition, who has just recently pledged Pi Beta Phi. We had the best conversation the day we shot the second session, we talked about her family and friends… and the things she enjoys. She is so easy to talk to and so comfortable in her own skin. She ran track and cross country in high school, and she joins her dad who is an avid runner every year on the 8 mile Turkey Trot, even though according to her mom, her dad Harry always beats her. That’s ok… because as we all know, Southern girls know how to lose gracefully and with impeccable manners. Speaking of Southern girls… As you can see this Texas girl loves her cowboy boots and can really rock them with a dress. I know how excited she is to be at A&M… and the Aggies are pretty darn lucky to get her as well.
I love this image because I think it shows Sophie’s playful, adventurous outdoor side… and I think it’s one of her best.
We really made the rounds the day we did the Plano shoot and ended up back in Highland Park where we started. There are some spots there that I absolutely love and that really complimented Sophie’s dress choices.
I am kind of a sucker for photos in fields of flowers and as it turned out… Sophie likes them too. These photos are just as sunny as Sophie herself… a real stunner…
I wish you every good experience that college has to offer sweet Sophie and I look forward to more photos with you in the future.
LOVELY KATELYN
I met Katelyn and her mom through another client who you have met previously on the blog, Kane Cogswell. I did Kane’s Senior photos and Kane and Katelyn and their families have known each other since they were children. I always love it when I get to meet not only the client and their family but their network of friends as well. When I think of Katelyn I think of words like delicate, ethereal, beautiful. She has that kind of beauty that is both delicate and strong, in fact she reminds me of a water sprite or a medieval damsel from some pre-Raphaelite painting. Something that may not be evident right away is that she also has a great sense of humor. I could tell that she and her mom were very close and my friend Linda had come along to assist so we had a great day together. Katelyn is from Sachse Texas, she was a cheerleader in high school and now she is off to A&M where from all accounts (and according to Facebook), she is absolutely loving being an Aggie. She had a built in welcoming committee at Texas A&M, as her boyfriend Zach was already there. The day we were taking these photos there was a lot of texting going on between Katelyn and Zach so I sure hope he liked the photos.
Her lavender dress and aqua beads were perfect to make her blue eyes pop… but this girl also wears an orangey-red really well.
Of course she had to show some Aggie pride…
And remember that sense of humor I referred to?
Katelyn I know you are having an absolute ball in college! Make the most of it! Keep me posted on your life and I wish you every joy!
TAMYTHA AND CELESTE’S SUMMER SHOOT IN COPPER CREEK
I’m sure that by now most of you have seen some photos that Celeste and I have posted from our June trip to Copper Peak, located in Ironwood Michigan. However, that being the case, I’ve had a lot of people ask me what our trip and our shoot was all about. The truth of the matter is that I just want an excuse to blog these amazing photos from this spot that is truly one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting… and even better, I was paid to do a shoot here! In the way of explanation I offer the following photo, which really explains it much better than I could…
The facility has not been used in many years and is now in the process of being renovated for a ski flying competition that will be held there in 2014. Bryan Sanders, who was a US Olympian in ski jumping at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France, is spearheading the project along with the Copper Peak Board of Directors. I’m going to include a link to an article that gives great information about what is happening at Copper Peak:
Ski Flyers to Fly Again in 2014 at Copper Peak
Here is Bryan, who is a great guy by the way… their intern Matt Croschere, who was so kind and took Celeste and I all around Copper Peak and it’s environs, having mapped out every single waterfall and interesting natural feature in the area, and the Copper Peak Board of Directors, who were a super nice bunch of men. There is also some images from the history of this facility thrown in.
As for Celeste and I, it is our task to photograph the jump, the facilities and the area for their website and other promotional purposes… and to do this in the spring/summer, the fall and then the winter. In fact we plan on being there for the first competition! It is really a dream job and we are so thrilled to be a part of what is happening at Copper Peak.
And now on to some photos… Before we even got to the UP, otherwise known as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the jump is located, we flew into Minneapolis and drove to our destination. We wouldn’t be girls… or photographers… if we hadn’t first done a little airport shopping as well as a couple mini photo shoots on the way… the landscape and the area are so amazingly scenic!
Before we could spread out and photograph the area around the jump we had to climb… yes climb… the jump itself and get some photos from the air. The ski lift takes you to the top of the hill but the rest of the way requires hoofing it so to speak. For this South Dakota/Texas girl who has always been afraid of heights, this was a feat in itself… but soooo worth it! What a sense of accomplishment and what an amazing view. Of course it didn’t bother Celeste a bit… that’s my adventurous daughter!
After this amazing climb, we were off to photograph the surrounding area, and let me tell you the natural beauty is breathtaking! I am going to let the photos speak for themselves. Copper Peak, Day 1:
We got up on Sunday ready for more shooting and we photographed everything we could before having to race to the airport and catch a plane back to Texas. Here is Copper Peak Day 2:
What an absolutely amazing trip and such a renewing experience! It’s such a blessing to get to do these kinds of jobs with my daughter whose wonder about the world around her equals my own. We can’t wait to go back in September and photograph the fall color!
