I’ve spent the last month going through over 100,000 photos I shot last year, to choose what I intended to be the 150 that stood out to me most. Let me tell you it’s a difficult task, and I always have @celestesmith weigh in. First let me say that 150 became 175-ish because I just couldn’t eliminate any more!
It is a very subjective group of images and I can’t really tell you what my criteria is. Sometimes it’s just aesthetics. Sometimes it’s the emotion or what the image represents… and sometimes they mark a milestone. All I can say is that they are the images that repeatedly stopped me in my tracks for one reason or another and I always love looking over my past year with gratitude at all the individuals, couples, families, organizations and businesses that I’ve connected with. It is always my goal to approach every project with passion and excellence and especially with love. And that is why I love sharing this annual grouping of photos with you!
THE VERY BEST PHOTOS OF 2016
It’s that time of year again, time to look back over tens of thousands of images to choose the ones that for one reason or another had the greatest impact on me. So yes, the criteria is very subjective… and not even something I can quantify. Sometimes it is color and light, sometimes it is the emotions captured, but sometimes it is something completely indescribable that just speaks to me. Obviously when narrowing down possibly 100,000 photos to 150 I can’t include every client, and I strive to make every client’s images the best because I truly love what I do and count it an honor every time someone steps in front of my camera. Some of these images were taken by my talented daughter Celeste who works with me, and we want to send out special love to our wedding couples who put so much faith in us… and the families we work with year after year… we are so happy to have been able to become a part of your history. We hope you enjoy looking back over 2016 and we look forward to many more photographic adventures together in 2017! xoxo
MEGAN’S GORGEOUS BRIDALS AT THE MILESTONE
One glance at Megan and it is immediately apparent that she is gorgeous, and when she approached me about shooting her wedding I immediately had visions of how beautiful her bridals would be… and of course… they are. What is not as immediately apparent is how kind she is, and how connected she is to the people she loves. She truly has a beautiful heart. Everyone who came to celebrate with them on their wedding day became a part of their love story, and there was an absolute wave of love and support for this couple.
She and her handsome groom are both teachers, but Megan also has quite a bit of modeling on her resume and has worn many wedding dresses during her career. You might think this would make it difficult to choose when the time came to find her own wedding gown, but she said that when she tried this one on she just knew! She chose a Demetrios gown, and their wedding venue which also served as the setting for this session couldn’t have been more perfect to set it off. It is a stately manor house with peaceful grounds, and it set the scene for this classically lovely November bride perfectly.

SARAH’S STUNNING ARLINGTON HALL BRIDALS
Sarah is beautiful, no doubt, but the thing you discover quickly after meeting her is that she is truly a breath of fresh air… so genuine, down to earth, and kind. I form a connection with all of my clients, and especially my brides because we spend so much time together, and I know that after sharing this wedding journey, I will count Sarah and her lovely family as lifetime friends. They all have that open hearted hospitality about them that just draws you in and assures you that you belong. The afternoon that I spent with Sarah and her mom Janet at Arlington Hall at Lee Park was such a joy, filled with sunshine and light, white columns and climbing vines… perfect for a Southern girl. I should also say that Sarah is not just a pretty face, she is an accomplished woman who graduated from the University of Virginia and is a large animal veterinarian. Her groom is an F-16 pilot for the United States Air Force and the two of them are just adorable together! I have been so excited to share this session, and when you see the beautiful piece of furniture covered in a deep red velvet, note that it is a family heirloom that Sarah and her mom brought from Paris, Texas just for this session. Those kind of personal details are the best!

KARINA AND WESLEY’S LOVELY CHURCH WEDDING
I first met Karina and Wesley across the table at a local Starbucks. My first impression was of an adorable couple with sweet smiles and kind faces. As we talked, the other thing that I noticed was how adoringly Wesley looked at Karina. That is one of those genuine things that can’t be misinterpreted… it’s what love looks like… and I have such a soft spot for guys who look at their significant other that way. I am a true romantic at heart, and I know a kindred spirit when I see one. So I was thrilled when they contacted me to confirm that they wanted me to shoot their wedding. This is one of those absolutely charming Texas weddings with the ceremony held at the couple’s family’s church, and such a sweet church too. The reception was held at the historic Melrose Hotel and as you will see, the candlelit room, with the tables named after well known Dallas streets, glowed with a soft light for everyone gathered to celebrate this couple.
The close knit group of friends that comprised the bridal party were such lovely girls, who had gone to high school together and their support of Karina on her special day was so endearing. When we photographed them prior to the ceremony they fluttered around her in their soft pink gowns laughing and during the ceremony there were few dry eyes among them. But I think one of the most beautiful moments of the day was when Karina’s dad saw her in her dress for the first time… and you can see his expression in the images below. I also have to mention the bride’s gorgeous gown. Ever since Kate Middleton wore sleeves at the royal wedding I have wanted to photograph a bride with lace sleeves, and truly isn’t Karina just a vision? I think it’s time to let the images do the talking…

DOUBLE THE LOVE, DOUBLE THE JOY: AMANDA AND DEREK, CARLY AND ADAM
We are bringing you twice the beauty on the blog today! I’ve been excited about this wedding ever since I sat down with two beautiful sisters last year to talk about their upcoming double ceremony. We have never been asked to do a double wedding before and just the prospect had our hearts aflutter! Amanda and Carly are stunning no doubt, but even more than that they are kind, and have such a connection with each other and with their families… and this made their lovely wedding so rich and meaningful. I first met their handsome grooms when we did both couple’s engagement photos downtown at the AT&T Performing Arts Center on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, and we were charmed by all four of them, their spirit of romanticism and fun. There is so much I could say about their Williams Square outdoor wedding and their La Cima Club reception, but I’m going to let the images do the talking. Feast your eyes on this stunning day in various shades of blush and pale girly pink, and you can take major style cues from both of the girl’s feminine gowns. It was so much fun to see the girl’s original style come out in their choices in cakes and florals and other details. By the way… keep your eye out for the two most adorable flower girls ever! Enjoy!

ROBIN’S BEAUTIFUL BRIDALS AT THE MEADOWS MUSEUM
Ever since the lovely and stylish Robin asked me to photograph her wedding, I started visualizing some equally stylish bridal portraits. I have been so anxious to share these gorgeous images… I literally squealed with delight when I was editing them because they are just so pretty… and that is all about Robin in her classic flowing silk gown… a gown that very few women could pull off! She and her handsome groom Brian wed this past Friday evening surrounded by family and friends at the charming Jefferson Tower, so I am finally free to share. Robin is the Events Manager at the Meadows Museum so it seemed like the perfect place to shoot these images, and the stately art filled spaces are the ideal backdrop for this beauty!
BEAUTIFUL ELLIE’S DOWNTOWN PHOTO SESSION
Ellie is a vibrant young professional who wanted to update her headshots. She is going to be speaking at a conference in the upcoming month and needed a new image. I’ve often talked on Facebook and other social media outlets about the importance of updating images on all of your social media platforms. In our digital age it is the quintessential way to put our best face forward so to speak… so that is what we set out to do. Of course sometimes a headshot session turns into something very different when everything just flows. Ellie is very easy to photograph and the camera loves her so we just had a ball! We laughed a lot and talked a lot and somehow still managed to come up with so many great images that I can’t pick a favorite! I think everyone should celebrate themselves in this way! Enjoy these images of lovely Ellie for some powerful inspiration.
MEGAN AND JOE TIE THE KNOT IN POETRY, TEXAS
Megan and Joe are the kind of couple that you can spend 5 minutes with and tell that they are so in tune with one another. They have such an apparent connection that you feel an overflow of happiness just being around them. Megan found me through a friend who is a client and the first time we met at Starbucks her face glowed with that smile you will see in many of these images when she spoke about Joe. Not only do they have that romantic spark, but they are the best of friends. The day of their wedding Texas had been experiencing rain the entire week previous, but the sun came out for these two in lovely Poetry Texas at the bride’s parent’s home. It was an absolutely idyllic setting by a charming lake and the blue sky made the perfect backdrop. From the girl’s time getting ready together in their adorable floral Etsy robes to the sparklers and fireworks that lit up the sky as the evening’s celebrations came to a close, I’m going to let the images tell the happy story.
LOVELY CATHERINE’S BRIDALS AT THE MEADOWS MUSEUM
Catherine is a classic beauty, and though she may appear demure in some of these images I can attest to the fact that she is one of the most vibrant people I have ever known. The term full of life doesn’t even begin to cover her exuberance, and the joy she took in every aspect of her wedding. Celeste and I had the best time with Catherine and her mom the day of this shoot… it was a real girl’s day for all of us and we left as fast friends. We chose the Meadows Museum and the surrounding Southern Methodist University Campus because her father has been on staff there for many years as the Head of the Bywaters Special Collections at the Hamon Arts Libraries. Her dad popped his head in to bring the dress before the session but we had to make sure he didn’t see his daughter in her bridal gown until his special first look the day of the wedding. Catherine’s choice of this stunning heavy silk ball gown is so perfect for the warm elegance of the museum and she is absolutely right at home among the works of art. You’ll be seeing more of Catherine and her adorable groom Justin when I blog their wedding very soon!
