Happy New Year friends! I just realized as I was going over all my photos from the past year to choose these very special 150 that this is my 6th year to do this! That makes me so happy! I do want to say that this is a totally subjective grouping in that these are my favorites… and have not been chosen by voting, or an impartial panel or anything even remotely like that. Some of the photos were taken by my daughter Celeste, which I must note because darn it I didn’t get to go to New Zealand where a couple of these were taken. I love every one of my clients and every wedding, event and portrait session is so important to me. But there is something about certain photos that just jump out at you, either aesthetically, or emotionally, or compositionally… and sometimes because of what they represent or say. And every year I do this it gets harder… I mean to tell you it’s difficult to choose just 150 out of over 100,000 photos. This is just something I do to reflect over my past year of work and to celebrate my clients and to celebrate creativity! A lot of lot of love went into each and every one of these photos and it was such a joy and honor to work with each of you and to be a part of your lives in this way. Here’s to more photo adventures in 2018!
THE BEST OF 2014
The intention was to have this post up and running the first week of January… but alas… crazy life got in the way and now January is almost over. Nevertheless I said I was going to do a “Best of 2014” blog post so here it is… and the old words ring true… better late than never! It is always a challenge and a joy to choose my favorite photos from a year of my work. I put my heart into every photo so there is a little something of me in every one… These 125 photos were chosen from a pared down pool of about 20,000 photos. I can’t always explain why I love a photo… suffice it to say that sometimes it’s simply aesthetics, sometimes meaning, and sometimes it is something personal… no matter the why I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do.
BEAUTIFUL ISABELLA
Isabella has the most amazing red hair and blue eyes… and photographs like a dream. This is enough in itself to make for a wonderful session… but add to that the fact that Isabella is a fellow creative and that it was a beautiful day in one of my favorite spots downtown and I am smiling ear to ear. Bella, as her friends and family call her attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts and will be attending Rider University in New Jersey for Musical Theatre in the fall. When I asked her about her passion she said, “Of course we all hope to be on Broadway, but I just hope to do theatre in any capacity. Basically I want to make a living doing what I love. I hope that lands me in either New York or Chicago.” As far as I am concerned after spending some time with her, she is well on her way! Chase those dreams Bella!
I mean truly… she has the most luminous and expressive eyes, and I’m sure her stage presence is just as luminous. I have often wished I was a redhead… and looking at these photos reminds me of why.
This shoot was a bit of a family affair, as our shoots usually are. I often shoot with my oldest daughter Celeste who works with me, but this time my younger daughter Medora came along. She has been coming along on mentoring shoots lately and it is my hope that in the future all three of us Cameron-Smith girls might get to work on projects together. Isabella’s mom Beverly who is a friend of mine also came along as did their adorable dog… and we all had such a fabulous time.
If everyone I photographed were this easy my job would be a dream… and to be honest… usually it is. Nevertheless it was a really wonderful shoot and I know that Isabella is going to be a success at whatever she does because she has that spark… can’t you see it?
I have to admit I am a sucker for a harlequin wall… and anything covered in vines…
Medora, Celeste and I wish you all the success in the world Bella! Keep in touch and enjoy New Jersey in the fall!
COLLYN IN THE SUNSHINE
This session with the stunning Collyn Robison is just so lovely and so full of light that I couldn’t resist sharing it on this cold January day. There are people that the camera loves… and Collyn is certainly one of them. Her smile just fills the frame and draws you in. Not to mention her lovely eyes, perfectly arched brows… and that hair… I mean this girl is a beauty. I can also attest that she is smart, kind, and humble, and so much fun to be around. She’s heading to the University of Texas in Austin in the fall, carrying on the Longhorn tradition that is very much a part of her family. Collyn and her mom Sally spent an afternoon at the Shops at Legacy with Celeste and I and we were fortunate to have that coveted golden light. Check out the results… I’m pretty crazy about these images.
Whenever I do a session with a senior I love seeing their clothing choices… being a fashion addict myself, I know the power of a good outfit… and Collyn’s choices were fabulous. The heels on her shoes are a killer ombre metallic… take note ladies.
These images with Collyn in this dreamy white in one of my favorite spots with wavy golden grass are so ethereal… I just love them. They are stylish, bohemian, and happy all at the same time. I have a feeling Collyn is going to make quite a splash at UT.
IT’S ALL ABOUT SOPHIE
Sophie Franks is such a lovely girl, that is evident… and not only in appearance, but in her manner, and in the way she interacts with the people in her life. Sophie has a younger sister Isabel and an older brother Alex and when you see the three of them with their parents there is so much love between them. Sophie is an amazing sister… and I can tell by the way she talks about her friends that she is a devoted friend as well. I got to know Sophie through her mom Mousumi… who is a dear friend of mine that I came to know through the Meadows Museum. Mousumi was one of the Museum’s amazing docents when I worked on the education staff there… and when I left the museum she took over the position I had held. I’ve had the privilege of spending time in the Frank’s home… and they are such wonderful people, all of them are accomplished in their own ways and they are so welcoming to anyone who comes into their home. I have taken photos of their family as well as their extended family. The session I did with their grandparents will make its way onto this blog and was one of my favorite sessions to date. These were her senior photos, and we actually did two separate sessions… a casual shoot at the Arboretum and a second session with some more dressed up shots that we did in my neck of the woods in the Plano area. These sessions were a quite a few months apart so you’ll notice that Sophie’s hair is longer in the casual photos… and of course, she’s beautiful both ways.
Sophie is now at Texas A&M where she is a freshman, studying nutrition, who has just recently pledged Pi Beta Phi. We had the best conversation the day we shot the second session, we talked about her family and friends… and the things she enjoys. She is so easy to talk to and so comfortable in her own skin. She ran track and cross country in high school, and she joins her dad who is an avid runner every year on the 8 mile Turkey Trot, even though according to her mom, her dad Harry always beats her. That’s ok… because as we all know, Southern girls know how to lose gracefully and with impeccable manners. Speaking of Southern girls… As you can see this Texas girl loves her cowboy boots and can really rock them with a dress. I know how excited she is to be at A&M… and the Aggies are pretty darn lucky to get her as well.
I love this image because I think it shows Sophie’s playful, adventurous outdoor side… and I think it’s one of her best.
We really made the rounds the day we did the Plano shoot and ended up back in Highland Park where we started. There are some spots there that I absolutely love and that really complimented Sophie’s dress choices.
I am kind of a sucker for photos in fields of flowers and as it turned out… Sophie likes them too. These photos are just as sunny as Sophie herself… a real stunner…
I wish you every good experience that college has to offer sweet Sophie and I look forward to more photos with you in the future.
LOVELY KATELYN
I met Katelyn and her mom through another client who you have met previously on the blog, Kane Cogswell. I did Kane’s Senior photos and Kane and Katelyn and their families have known each other since they were children. I always love it when I get to meet not only the client and their family but their network of friends as well. When I think of Katelyn I think of words like delicate, ethereal, beautiful. She has that kind of beauty that is both delicate and strong, in fact she reminds me of a water sprite or a medieval damsel from some pre-Raphaelite painting. Something that may not be evident right away is that she also has a great sense of humor. I could tell that she and her mom were very close and my friend Linda had come along to assist so we had a great day together. Katelyn is from Sachse Texas, she was a cheerleader in high school and now she is off to A&M where from all accounts (and according to Facebook), she is absolutely loving being an Aggie. She had a built in welcoming committee at Texas A&M, as her boyfriend Zach was already there. The day we were taking these photos there was a lot of texting going on between Katelyn and Zach so I sure hope he liked the photos.
Her lavender dress and aqua beads were perfect to make her blue eyes pop… but this girl also wears an orangey-red really well.
Of course she had to show some Aggie pride…
And remember that sense of humor I referred to?
Katelyn I know you are having an absolute ball in college! Make the most of it! Keep me posted on your life and I wish you every joy!
KANE COGSWELL
I always enjoy shooting individuals as there is so much freedom and variety in what you can do… but I have to say it is rare to come across a young man who is such a natural in front of the camera. Kane and I met some months ago to do some senior shots and immediately he, his mom Shelly and I hit it off. We decided on the old Plano area for a cool urban feel and we hit the ground running. Almost everyone can look good smiling in a photo, but Kane has a killer serious face that just works in front of the camera.
There were seriously no end to the great spots we found for this shoot and Kane was game for every one.
Kane and his mom were very patient as we drove around in circles looking for the hubcap wall I had discovered in a previous shoot… that’s what I like… clients with an adventurous spirit.
Kane is now at Sam Houston State University at the start of what I predict will be a stellar college career… I mean look out ladies, Kane is in town.
