Happy New Year friends! I just realized as I was going over all my photos from the past year to choose these very special 150 that this is my 6th year to do this! That makes me so happy! I do want to say that this is a totally subjective grouping in that these are my favorites… and have not been chosen by voting, or an impartial panel or anything even remotely like that. Some of the photos were taken by my daughter Celeste, which I must note because darn it I didn’t get to go to New Zealand where a couple of these were taken. I love every one of my clients and every wedding, event and portrait session is so important to me. But there is something about certain photos that just jump out at you, either aesthetically, or emotionally, or compositionally… and sometimes because of what they represent or say. And every year I do this it gets harder… I mean to tell you it’s difficult to choose just 150 out of over 100,000 photos. This is just something I do to reflect over my past year of work and to celebrate my clients and to celebrate creativity! A lot of lot of love went into each and every one of these photos and it was such a joy and honor to work with each of you and to be a part of your lives in this way. Here’s to more photo adventures in 2018!
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER FOR YOU
Hey guys… it’s Medora!
Though Tamytha usually rocks at posting great photos here on our blog, today I am taking over to give a little advice on a topic that I believe is one of the most important decisions a girl can make when planning a wedding. Although many of my friends are still a couple years shy of their wedding day, getting the perfect photos seems to be at the top of the list of what is most important to them. We live in a world where having the perfect profile picture and uploading beautiful Instagram photos is a priority, perhaps even a rite of passage for women of all ages, but especially ladies in their 20s and 30s… I know it is for me!
Choosing a wedding photographer for your big day is often one of the most difficult decisions in the wedding planning process. Today’s bride has a barrage of online inspiration to use as a starting point. These days, almost everyone across the country is aware of the blockbuster blog Style Me Pretty. Young ladies throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area are familiar with our local trendsetter, Brides of North Texas. Beyond blogs, there are a myriad of other online social media outlets that offer offer plenty of enviable ideas, like Pinterest, Instagram, and even Facebook. In other words, there are simply too many choices, and that can make your wedding photography decision overwhelming and confusing.
I have found that with girls my age– recent college graduates and girls in their early 20’s– word of mouth, advice from friends, and social media tend to hold the most weight when it comes to these kinds of decisions. Everyone from your high school friend to your cousin’s cousin to your college sorority sister to that one girl you’re friends with on Facebook (but you can’t quite remember how you know her) will offer you plenty of advice on the wedding photographers they’ve worked with and adored.
After talking to your friends and scouring multiple Instagram hashtags and well known wedding blogs, you find yourself with a list of potential wedding photographers. How do you narrow down your list to pick YOUR perfect wedding photographer? Being the obsessive list maker that I am I have composed a checklist to help you make this decision a lot easier.
Style
Wedding photography tells a story. How do you want your story to be told? Wedding photography style usually boils down to three types: Traditional, Contemporary, and Photojournalistic. Most photographers will offer a combination of these. The quickest way to get a read on a photographer’s overall style is to look at a blog post from a particular wedding. This is a good way to tell how they photograph an 8 hour wedding day and to see if they align with your particular style and wedding needs. If you want dark, dramatic photographs and your photographers photos are full of light and color and movement, it’s beneficial to ask if they are capable of fitting your desires, and if not… time to move on to the next photographer!
Products and Services
Obviously it is really important to know the services the photographer offers; meaning number of hours on the wedding day, whether they are going to include the digital images, second shooters, bridal portraits, etc. Before you contact a photographer, it’s best to have a list of your must haves to discuss with them. If your photographer has a great personality, it’s easy to get swept away in conversation and leave your meeting with many of your questions unanswered. Pinterest can help a lot with knowing what to ask (there are a million guides out there)… but here’s a list of questions by Here Comes the Guide that we really love!
Budget
This one seems pretty straightforward (but we know for a typical girl this one is the biggest pain in the butt). Know how much you can reasonably spend on photography and make sure the photographers you are considering fall in that range. Often the prices on a photographer’s website can be negotiated if their are certain services you might be able to live without, so if you find someone whose work you love, always ask. At the same time, remember that the pictures are the only thing you’ll take with you when it’s all said and done. Many women seem to think this is an area to sacrifice when it comes to their budget, and then end up disappointed months after the event looking back on the photos knowing that they can never be redone. So don’t skimp on the photography just because those out-of-season Peonies would look gorgeous in your bouquet.
Personality and Fit
To me, this is the most important aspect of choosing a wedding photographer. You should like the person that is going to be by your side on one of the most important days of your life. It’s important to ask a lot of questions, but make time to get to know your photographer as a person and not just as a business. I truly believe that it is an honor to be trusted to capture a wedding day, and in almost every instance, for us, it has turned into a friendship.
Wedding planning can be a daunting process, but we know that you have good taste and it’s important to find the perfect photographer to make sure you remember every detail for years to come. If you follow these tips, you will definitely find the one for you – who knows, maybe it will even be us! Good Luck!
Happy wedding planning!

ALI AND KASPAR
It’s immediately obvious when you meet Ali and Kaspar that they are beautiful people… these images will attest to that. It’s also immediately evident how easy they are with one another, and how crazy they are about each other too. But what you may not immediately pick up on is all the things that make them uniquely them… things we incorporated into their session. Things like Kaspar’s love of donuts, Ali’s sense of style, and Kaspar’s passion for longboarding… which he shares with Ali… I mean look at the two of them on that board! And have you ever seen two people who can knock out handstands like that on a hot afternoon in jeans? We met at the Filter Building at White Rock Lake and it made the perfect backdrop for these two. It was an absolutely perfect summer day in Dallas and we had a ball! I am so excited about these images… I have been posting them on Instagram like crazy and everyone loves them. These two were adventurous and a dream to work with and Celeste and I are so excited about their Long Island wedding coming up in September! Ali and Kaspar met there as kids, so what better place for them to commit to forever?
TALIA AND JOSH ARE ADORABLE, AND GETTING MARRIED!
Talia and Josh are such an adorable couple! The first time I met them at Starbucks along with Talia’s mom to talk wedding photography I was immediately drawn in by their warm personalities. Talia has one of those smiles that lights up the room, and Josh so obviously loves her that it’s impossible not to smile when you are with them. Laughter spilled over during our engagement session and the connection and chemistry between these two is so evident. They are having a beautiful May wedding at Cross Creek Ranch in Parker and the day is drawing near… everything is coming together for their big day… and I am excited to share these images of these two lovebirds. Josh is a baseball player, having played throughout his college career, so they thought some baseball themed photos should be a part of their session… and even though they now root for different teams, its all in good fun… and the results are totally charming!
THE BEST OF 2014
The intention was to have this post up and running the first week of January… but alas… crazy life got in the way and now January is almost over. Nevertheless I said I was going to do a “Best of 2014” blog post so here it is… and the old words ring true… better late than never! It is always a challenge and a joy to choose my favorite photos from a year of my work. I put my heart into every photo so there is a little something of me in every one… These 125 photos were chosen from a pared down pool of about 20,000 photos. I can’t always explain why I love a photo… suffice it to say that sometimes it’s simply aesthetics, sometimes meaning, and sometimes it is something personal… no matter the why I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do.
BECCA AND GREG ARE ENGAGED!
Becca and Greg are such a sweet and romantic couple! I hadn’t met Greg before this shoot as I had only met with Becca and her mom to discuss the wedding. This is often the case and I never know how the groom to be is going to be in front of the camera. Greg was quiet at first, but I tell you what… this young man is a natural in front of the camera. These two have such great chemistry and such an amazing connection that it translated seamlessly to the camera. Their natural romanticism and loving way with one another made for beautiful images. They met in high school and have been together for many years despite how young they appear. I have a feeling that they will be one of those couples who will always appear younger than they are… lucky devils.
We met at Becca’s family home and the area was rich with perfect spots for photos. Between the bridge… which was such a fabulous backdrop, to the light coming through the golden trees, to the beautiful pool in the back yard, we were absolutely spoiled with beauty! I was particularly spoiled this day because my dear friend and fellow photographer Udi Mandu came along to share his lighting magic with us and it doesn’t hurt that he also sounds like Antonio Banderas… or maybe Antonio Banderas sounds like Udi… but at any rate everything pretty much sounds good when he says it. So we had romance coming from all directions.
There are things that stand out with every new couple I work with… of course these two have great style and I always notice that… (three changes of clothes make my stylemeter happy)… But more than that I noticed the way Greg looked at Becca. He seemed not to get tired of looking at her, it was as if we weren’t even there… and he obviously loves being close to her. I don’t think Becca minds a bit.
I have to confess that I am pretty crazy about these images… I liked every one of them… which is so rare for me. But I mean who wouldn’t like these two? Their love is contagious! Becca wanted some fall-ish images as their wedding is going to be in February and the save the dates will be going out in the fall. Being the “all out fall fan” that I am I was all for it! I have to also note that the back of Greg’s truck was such a cool place for photos… personal to them and it doesn’t hurt that they look like they are in some kind of ad. They are both Baylor Grads (Go Bears!) as am I, so I tried to get the Baylor sticker on the rear window in the image…but found myself honing in on the two of them instead.
These two are just a stunning couple… and it was a joy to photograph them. This is one of my very favorite images from the day, which was a hard call let me tell you! Becca and Greg I absolutely cannot wait to photograph the wedding!
RACHEL AND BEN ARE ENGAGED!
I first met Rachel when I was at SMU while working at the Meadows Museum. She was studying there and was part of our student docent program for a time. Rachel is beautiful… that is easy to see when you look at these photographs, but she is smart and creative too, we both have a background in art history making her a kindred spirit! So when I got a message from Rachel telling me she was getting married and wanted to talk about photography I was thrilled! I was also very anxious to meet Ben because I was certain that Rachel would pick an amazing young man. Celeste and I first met with Rachel and her mom to discuss the planning process and we knew right away that this was going to be such a fun wedding to photograph. We always try to get a feel for the style vibe of the wedding we are going to be shooting and Rachel summed it up as casual elegance. I already knew from her Pinterest Boards that she has a great sense of style. We also always want to get a feel for who the individuals we will be photographing are as a couple. She described herself and Ben as casual and easy going, sometimes goofy, and fun loving… and we certainly laughed during this shoot. They are obviously crazy about each other. They met at school at Texas Tech and have been inseparable ever since… 6 years and counting and now they and their families and their dogs, Aspen and Ella, are getting ready for a June wedding!
You really can’t miss Rachel’s stunning blue eyes, but her cobalt dress really makes them pop. What a stunning girl. I joked with Ben that it must have been Rachel’s perfect hair that made him fall in love with her. “That was exactly it,” he said laughing.
Aspen, the beautiful white and gray husky and Ella the lab are a big part of Rachel and Ben’s life and so they had to be in these photos… in fact Rachel described them as their children… I really think that all the best people love animals.
I mean don’t all Dallas brides-to be take their dogs to the park in heels? Those of you who know me know that I certainly would.
I love to see couples happy and laughing… one of the best things in the world and certainly one of the best parts of my job!
The light on this September evening was perfect and couples like these two and images like these are why I love doing engagement shoots so much!
We are going to be doing a fun part 2 to this session so stay tuned! Congratulations again Rachel and Ben!
